It seems that everyone who tries to start their own 24 hour internet business buys everything from the gurus. I think that we often mistake "buying" to mean "learning and doing well". Obviously they're not. Had I paid attention in school to my Transcendentalism, I'd have known that some old, dead guy once said that "an ounce of action is worth a ton of theory."
We all love it when someone comes into our lives and makes things crystal clear. Step-by-step, from pillar to post, teaching us like when we were young. It's so important to find someone to show us the way like that. And what do internet newbies need to know? It seems to come down to these three skills.
Primarily, you need to do keyword research. And do it well. It's where most internet marketers fall down. At the first hurdle, sadly. It's all well and good to want to work at home, but you certainly need to make sure that your store can make a profit. Or you'll be heading back to your dreaded boss, cap-in-hand.
The next step is for someone to explain to you how to make your blog relevant, timely, and able to be monetized. You don't want to babble on about your life - you need to add massive value. Overdeliver. Keep them coming back for more. Oh, and catch the attention of the surfers, spiders, and advertisers.
Which leads me to my third question: once you get all of this sorted out, how do you automate the business? I'm a big Tim Ferriss fan, and I think he's hit the nail on the head. Who really wants to sit in front of his computer all day and tweet, post, or chat all day? No one with a life already, that's for sure. So you need someone to teach that as well.
Once you get all those ducks in a row, you're sorted. But how long does that actually take? Ages, perhaps. I think that if you've got a mentor, who may speak to you like a 4 year-old (a la Denzel Washington in Philadelphia), then you will have finally found your Holy Grail.
